Wilberforce, Samuel
(1805–73)
   Bishop.
   Wilberforce was a son of William wilberforce. He had a successful career in the Church of England, becoming chaplain to Prince Albert in 1840, Dean of Westminster in 1845, Bishop of Oxford in 1845 and Bishop of Winchester in 1869. He was a pioneer in the modern style of episcopacy and the pastoral organisation of his diocese was widely imitated. He also was a founder of Cuddesdon Theological College for the training of clergy. He is remembered for his famous debate with the scientist Thomas huxley on the vexed question of evolution.
